Jeep Wrangler JK owners upgrade their vehicles with better suspension systems, larger tires, and body protection to crawl over difficult trails and withstand the abuse. While factory skid plates protect the engine, transfer case and other vital areas, the Jeep’s crossmember is left to take on hard hits against solid rock.
Here you can see how bent this factory crossmember is on this Jeep JK Wrangler. |
The factory JK Wrangler crossmember is made from boxed steel but often gets, bent and twisted with constant abuse. The easiest solution to fixing a bent-up factory crossmember is to replace it with a much stronger piece. OR-Fab manufactures a direct replacement Jeep JK crossmember that’s 50 percent stronger than the original and installs in about 30-45 minutes.
Compared to the factory crossmember the OR-Fab piece is thicker, manufactured from 3/16-inch steel plate, and is fully box welded for superior strength and comes with ½-inch stainless steel button head bolts.
Rebel Off Road in Lake Forest, California installed one of the OR-Fab crossmembers onto this Jeep JK Wrangler. |
The installation is relatively simple and begins by removing the transfer case skid plate and properly supporting the transfer case, while the crossmember and transmission bolts are removed. The OEM crossmember is held on by a bracket on each side of the frame and the factory bolts will be reused.
The new OR-Fab crossmember bolts into the factory location and provides an additional 1/4-inch of ground clearance. |
Once it’s bolted in, the factory transmission is secured to the new crossmember and the transfer case skid plate is reattached.
It takes about 30 minutes to install the new crossmember and the wrinkled black powder coat finish is extremely durable. While the OR-Fab crossmember much stronger than the factory unit, it also provides ¼-inch of added ground clearance and makes for an easy upgrade that can handle serious abuse while also strengthening your Jeeps chassis.
